Hi, I’m Thea Kable.

I’m a designer and PhD candidate working on the unceded lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. I’ve designed publications including an anthology of kids’ stories, and a book about hopeful futures. My illustrations have appeared alongside pirate-y prose, childrens’ stories, and health articles. I also make comics about space settlement and the biosphere. Want to see more?

Letters From A Better Place was a co-design workshop which guided users through the process of proposing, building, and reflecting on their ideal future worlds. I designed and ran this workshop as part of a research project examining Design Fictions, storytelling, and the way we talk about change.

Lessons from a Better Place was the 115-page publication of research findings from Letters. It includes author-developed Design Fictions based on the worldbuilding developed during Letters. Staged as B. Racter’s journals during her exploration of a variety of Closed Intentional Communities, the publication includes an interview between editor and author, written fiction, object fictions, and materials from the workshop. A full PDF of the publication, and a full PDF of the final thesis, is available on request.
